Das Ausmaß des Spiels ist vielleicht nicht so episch wie in anderen Erweiterungen oder den Basis-Koalitionen, aber der Einsatz ist trotzdem hoch! Die Realpolitik-Erweiterung ist für 1-4 Spieler konzipiert, mit einem neuen Solo-Modus und einem Schwerpunkt auf dem wettbewerbsfähigen 2-Spieler-Modus, in dem beide Spieler zwei Nationen kontrollieren. Das Activator-System wurde für diesen Modus modifiziert und das Gesamtthema der Erweiterung ist etwas anders. Sagen wir mal, wir vergessen nicht, die massiven Auswirkungen der Eisenbahnen Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu berücksichtigen. Die Realpolitik führt auch mehr Asymmetrie zwischen den Nationen ein als im Basisspiel der Koalitionen, von dem sehr militanten Preußen und dem wirtschaftlich starken Frankreich bis hin zum neu, aber nicht vollständig vereinten Italien und dem multiethnischen Österreich.
