Thorgal. The Board Game is a cooperative storybook adventure game for 1-4 players aged 14 and up, designed by Joanna Kijanka, Jan Maurycy, and Rafał Szyma. Players take on the roles of Thorgal, his wife Aaricia, their son Jolan, and Kriss – a deadly warrior – as they experience a series of adventures. The game consists of 7 standalone scenarios, each taking approximately 90–120 minutes to play. Scenarios do not form a campaign, nor do they feature legacy elements, allowing them to be played by different groups of players and over a longer period of time. Thorgal: The Board Game comes with a map book. Each scenario is played on a different map that players explore while fulfilling scenario objectives, promising completely different adventures, hidden opportunities, and vivid characters. Players are free to travel in a group or split up to cover multiple areas simultaneously. They also pursue side quests that may help them win a scenario. Another important feature in the game is the storybook containing narrative descriptions of encounters that characters make in each scenario. Adventures described in the book are specific to each scenario and character, but many of them are randomly ordered within a scenario, providing greater replayability and allowing for repeated play. There are also side plots that players can pursue to gain advantages and unveil additional parts of the story. While Thorgal: The Board Game has a strong narrative element, it features a brand new, unique action selection mechanism. In this new mechanism, actions have different effects depending on what other actions have already been performed. Players carefully plan their strategy and the order of actions performed, as this directly affects the strength of each action's effect. This creates an interesting decision space and makes every round important for everyone at the table. Another important mechanism is character development. Each character gains experience throughout the game and improves their skills. This dynamic progression allows players to make meaningful choices about how to further develop their hero in the game. Characters collect resources and craft items to survive in the dangerous world.
