Rome has fallen, the map of Europe redrawn. People of all social strata set off for new and unknown shores, and new empires emerge. It is an era of opportunities and change. This is the time of the Early Middle Ages, also known as the Vendel Period in Sweden. It was named after the town of Vendel, located near Stockholm, and lasted approximately from 550–793 AD. Several graves with valuable and informative grave goods were found there. During the Vendel Period, new technologies were developed, and cultural and social changes occurred, paving the way for the Viking Age. This period also saw the establishment of the first trade routes of the later Vikings, and expeditions to new waterways led to a lively exchange of all kinds of products. The cultural influence of the North was felt far beyond the borders of Scandinavia. In this fertile environment, the power of those who would later become the great leaders of the Vikings also grew. Take on the role of one of these families and lead your tribe through 250 years of history. Become the most influential family as the Viking Age approaches.

You are each a family in one of the Nordic cultures that developed into one of the leading families of the Viking Age.

Each round represents a generation, and you try to recruit the best and most capable individuals into your family. You place family members on the game board for basic and talent actions to access various effects at different locations, such as ventures or to gain new family members. When the family member is elevated to status, they are linked to a character card taken from a market and moved to a family tree. The character goes onto the family tree tableau, and both their presence on the ancestor tableau and on the family tree tableau affect the family's opportunities for the rest of the game.

You must plan well before the centuries run out! The first family to have two future achievements from the ancestor tableau wins. If no player achieves this before a certain number of turns, the player with the most points wins. → After a certain number of rounds or after a person has obtained 2 golden achievements from the ancestor tableau, the person with the most points wins.
