You are tired and your feet hurt, but you still haven't finished your round through Nihonbashi. You stop, stretch, and turn to the merchant in the shop to your right with a smile. You must cultivate relationships and conduct honest business, because only those who care for the well-being and prosperity of Edo and its inhabitants can become the most successful Edokko!

Welcome to Edo!
Spend a year in Edo and become the most respected Edokko, a "child of Edo". You will recruit merchants and artisans of various kinds and assign them workplaces on the main street of Nihonbashi. The winner will be the one who has acquired the most Iki - a concept that is only roughly translated as "reputation" and rather stands for the way of life, to ideally walk the "path of the citizen".

Edo (present-day Tokyo) was a flourishing city with over a million inhabitants. One half city dwellers, the other samurai. Edo's main street, in the Nihonbashi district, was a single shopping mile, where one stall lined up after another. There you could buy not only kimonos and rice, but also countless other valuable items. In the game Iki, you will meet numerous merchants and artisans along the bustling main street in their shops, hire them or trade with them, experience how they gain experience and retire, and hopefully survive one or more fires.

The game takes place over 13 months, with the 13th month representing the New Year's festival. Each month you will receive income, decide how far you want to move your Oyakata, stroll along the main street, and interact with the local merchants and businesses. 3 times during the game, a fire will break out in one of the Nagaya, which are the 4 districts, for which you will hopefully be well prepared.

You must recruit artists and sellers and promote and train their skills. They must trade, make purchases, erect status symbols for Edo, and also contribute to the development of the city.

Your merchants gain experience with each interaction with other players and eventually retire. But even then, they still bring you income.

Trade rice, fish, and tobacco, erect buildings, and collect Iki - because only those who live their lives according to this philosophy will ultimately win happily.

How to play?‍

Each round is divided into 3 phases:
1. Ikizama Phase: In descending order of your firefighting strength, you place your Ikizama figures on the Ikizama track.‍

2. Action Phase: 1) You receive money or may hire merchants, 2) you move your Oyakata and may conduct business, and 3) you retrieve your Ikizama figure.

‍3. Event Phase: It depends on the month:
Payday: At the end of each season (i.e., after months 3, 6, 9, and 12).
There is a fire at the end of months 5, 8, and 11.

In phases 2 and 3, you can increase your IKI (and mark it on the IKI track).
The game ends after the New Year's festival. You then receive points for your merchant variety, fish, tobacco pouches, buildings, and resources.

‍The player who has collected the most IKI wins the game!
