Path of Civilization is a nation management game where players compete to score the most victory points. The game is played over 9 rounds, with each round divided into several phases.

In each round, players place 4 of their 5 technology cards to generate the necessary resources. Some resources are represented by dice, allowing players to build new wonders, recruit new leaders, advance their people's philosophy, or overcome the challenges and battles humanity will face. Other resources are represented by cylinders, symbolizing the research points needed to discover new technologies.

The end of each round is initiated by an event – either a challenge or a battle – which grants victory points and bonuses upon resolution.
