In this award-winning game, players take on the roles of Grandes in medieval Spain. The King's power is waning, and these powerful lords vie for control of the various regions. To do so, they draw Caballeros (knights) to their court and then place them on the board to gain control of the regions. After every third round, the regions are scored, and after the ninth round, the player with the most points is the winner. In each of the nine rounds, you choose one of your 13 cards to determine the order, as well as the number of Caballeros you can bring from the provinces (general supply) to your court (personal supply).

A round then consists of choosing one of five action cards, which allow for rule variations and additional scoring opportunities, in addition to determining how many Caballeros to move from your court to one or more regions on the board (or into the Castillo - a secret tower). Usually, you may only place your Caballeros in regions adjacent to the King's. The only hard rule in El Grande is that nothing may move into or out of the King's territory. With one of the five action cards, which is always available in each round, you can move the King to a new region. The other four action cards vary from round to round. The goal is to have a Caballero majority in as many regions (and the Castillo) as possible during a scoring round. After scoring the Castillo, you place all the cubes you had there into the region you secretly indicated on your region dial. Each region then receives a single score according to a table printed in that region. Two bonus points are awarded for sole majority in the region with your Grande and in the region with the King.
