Based on the Northgard video game universe, Northgard: Uncharted Lands is a game of conquest and exploration set in the Viking Age. Each player controls a Viking clan and tries to achieve victory by earning fame in various ways or by controlling the most valuable territories of this new continent. The game focuses on streamlined rules and mechanisms that allow for a fast and smooth game pace. In each round, players take turns performing actions to adapt their strategies to their opponents' moves and the expansion of the board. Fame (i.e., points) can be earned through exploration, combat, and control and development of territories. The various corresponding actions are played with the cards players have in their hand. At the end of each round, they must choose a new card to improve their personal deck as their clans develop new tactics and technologies. The conquest of Northgard also requires clever resource management to build new buildings, improve the effectiveness of your warriors, upgrade your cards, and enhance the unique characteristics of your clan. The winter phase complicates management, as you must feed your units to keep them healthy and happy. The pace of the game is set by the players, as the game ends after seven rounds but can also be concluded at any time if one of them has control over three closed territories with certain types of buildings.
